What are the requirements for the Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) certification?

According to the SBA, some of the requirements for a SDVOSB Certification include:

    • Be considered a small business, as defined by the SBA’s Small Business Size Standards (use the tool below)
    • Have no less than 51% of the business owned and controlled by one or more veterans.
    • For certification as a SDVOSB, have no less than 51% of the business owned and controlled by one or more veterans rated as service-disabled by the VA.
    • For those veterans who are permanently and totally disabled and unable to manage the daily business operations of their business, their business may still qualify if their spouse or appointed, permanent caregiver is assisting in that management.
    • Also an active and compliant registration in SAM

How long does my small business certification last?

The length of time a small business certification lasts depends on a few factors:

    • When your registration SAM expires (use the tool below)
    • If you still meet the small business size standards (use the tool below)
    • Specific certification regulations
      • For example; a WOSB Certification needs to go through a recertification process every THREE years, while the HUBZone lasts for as long as you qualify and remain in a HUBZone.

What qualifications and certifications are required for federal contracting?

The main qualification for federal contracting would be to have an active and compliant SAM Registration. Can a business lose its HUBZone Certification? If so, what might cause this to happen?

There are a few factors that could go into why a business to lose its HUBZone Certification:

    • Expired SAM Registration (click below to see if your SAM is still active)
    • No longer qualifies
      • Principal office no longer in a HUBZone
      • 35% of FTE (Full-Time Employees) do NOT reside in a HUBZone anymore
      • No longer meets SBA size standards (use the tool below to find out if you do)
    • Did not recertify in time
      • Entities MUST recertify either 30 days BEFORE or 30 days AFTER the expiration date of the certification

The type of businesses that are eligible for set-aside certifications depend on a number of factors. You must be registered in SAM and you must meet the SBA Small Business Size standards. Additionally, there are requirements to obtaining a HUBZone Certification, such as:

    • Principle office must be located in a HUBZone

    • Person applying must be a U.S. citizen
