There are many benefits to being HUBZone certified, but it’s primary one is being awarded contracts that specifically go to HUBZone certified businesses. There are certain federal contracts or grants that must be awarded to those in a HUBZone. so if you are certified you will be a recipient of them.

What is the purpose of a capabilities statement?

The purpose of a capabilities statement is for you to show off the goods and services that you provide as a business. Prime contractors and contracting officer often as for a capability statement so they can get an idea of what provide as a business. This is especially important if you are looking to be sought out by contracting officers, who will be able to find you in the small business database search.

SAM Registration Status

What are the compliance requirements for maintaining set-aside certifications?

One major compliance requirement for maintaining any set-aside is keeping your SAM Registration active and compliant. Each set-aside certification offered by the Small Business Administration (SBA) has it’s own procedures and standards for maintaining that specific certification.

Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB/EDWOSB)

According to SBA, maintaining a WOSB or EDWOSB certification requires participants to annually attest to meeting program requirements set forth in 13 CFR 127.  Annual attestation must be submitted within 30 days of the anniversary date of certification. Additionally, firms must undergo a program examination every three years conducted by SBA or a third-party certifier.

Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB/SDVOSB)

For VOSB and SDVOSB (Service Disabled Veteran-Owned) certifications, they are good for a total of three years. Once the three-year period is up, you must recertify and stay compliant

HUBZone Certification

You’ll need to recertify for the HUBZone program once a year. There is no limit to the length of time a business can participate as long as it continues to qualify. A “program examination” is required every 3 years to make sure you still meet the requirements as the map changes every 5 years and new locations arise.     • Be a for-profit business of any legal structure.
    • Be independently owned and operated.
    • Not be nationally dominant in its field.
    • Be physically located and operate in the U.S. or its territories.

To qualify for a VOSB Certification, you must meet the requirements set forth by both SBA and the VA. Those requirements include:

    • Meet SBA Small Business Size Standards

    • 51% or greater owned and controlled by a US Veteran
    • US Veteran must oversee the day-to-day operations

What happens if I submit my application for HUBZone before a map update?

Submit HUBZone before Update?

In order to be certified into the program, the applicant must be eligible as of the date it was submitted for review and the HUBZone director issues a decision. If you submit before a map update, as long as you meet the qualifications (i.e. map location), you should not have any issue with getting HUBZone Certified.
