Do you still need a DUNS number to register with SAM?

As of April of 2022, the DUNS number identification system was phased out and replaced by SAM’s own UEI (Unique Entity Identifier). If you did not received a notifcation for SAM or of unsure if/what your UEI is, follow the steps below:

    • At the top of this page, select “Check UEI and Expiration Status”
    • Input your company’s FULL legal business name or CAGE Code (if known)
    • Solve the security question and select “Check SAM Status NOW”
    • Allow the page to generate a brief summary of your SAM Registration that includes:
      • UEI (and CAGE Code)
      • Expiration Date
      • Primary NAICS Codes
      • PSC and FSC Codes
      • Primary POC’s
      • and more
    • If for any reason the tool is not working, please contact the Help Desk at 1-888-646-9998

To begin the SAM Registration renewal process, you must ensure that you have all required documentation and information needed. Completing the SAM Registration on your own can be tedious and time consuming, as well as frustration. What are the compliance requirements for maintaining set-aside certifications?

One major compliance requirement for maintaining any set-aside is keeping your SAM Registration active and compliant. Each set-aside certification offered by the Small Business Administration (SBA) has it’s own procedures and standards for maintaining that specific certification.

Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB/EDWOSB)

According to SBA, maintaining a WOSB or EDWOSB certification requires participants to annually attest to meeting program requirements set forth in 13 CFR 127.  Annual attestation must be submitted within 30 days of the anniversary date of certification. Additionally, firms must undergo a program examination every three years conducted by SBA or a third-party certifier.

Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB/SDVOSB)

For VOSB and SDVOSB (Service Disabled Veteran-Owned) certifications, they are good for a total of three years. Once the three-year period is up, you must recertify and stay compliant

HUBZone Certification

You’ll need to recertify for the HUBZone program once a year. There is no limit to the length of time a business can participate as long as it continues to qualify. A “program examination” is required every 3 years to make sure you still meet the requirements as the map changes every 5 years and new locations arise. What are the 5 SBA requirements of a small business?

According to SBA, the 5 requirements of a small business are:

    • Be a for-profit business of any legal structure.
    • Be independently owned and operated.
    • Not be nationally dominant in its field.
    • Be physically located and operate in the U.S. or its territories.

*In addition to the above requirements, you must also meet the SBA specific size standards to obtain a small business certification*

What is a SAM Registration?

The SAM Registration is necessary for any business looking to bid on federal contracts or receive federal grants. Any money that is being sent to a business by the federal government MUST be registered in SAM. To qualify for a VOSB Certification, you must meet the requirements set forth by both SBA and the VA. Those requirements include:

    • Meet SBA Small Business Size Standards

    • 51% or greater owned and controlled by a US Veteran
    • US Veteran must oversee the day-to-day operations
