What are set aside contracts?

The federal government sets aside a portion of funding to certain small business certified companies. For example 5% of federal funding is allocated to certified Woman Owned Small Businesses and 3% goes to HUBZone Certified Businesses.

Why do I have a missing capability statement?

If you have a missing capability statement in your DSBS profile, that means you are NOT a SBA Certified Small Business. Once your SAM Registration becomes active in SAM, you can become SBA certified. There are few requirements to make that happen, such as:

    • Primary NAICS Code (must comply with SBA Size Standards)
    • Average Annual Revenue (over three years)
    • Number of FTE (Full-Time Employees)

What are the qualifications for 8a?

Qualifications for 8a

In order to qualify to the 8(a) program you or your small business must be at a social and economic disadvantage. You must be a newly registered entity with no prior history of applying for 8(a). Your business must make less than $6.5 million a year. A requirement for any set-aside certification would be to have an active and compliant SAM Registration.

The Minority Business Enterprise, is certification that identifies businesses widely owned and ran by recognized ethnic groups. It is a high standard, for profit program businesses can use if they are at least 50% with a minority group. In order to know whether you can be qualified you must register with SAM to complete any process doing business with the federal government. How will I know my business needs a SAM?

If you plan on doing business with the federal government…

You will need to apply for a SAM. If you need to check an entity’s status, follow the steps below:

    1. At the top of this page, select “Check SAM & UEI Status” in red
    2. Input your company’s legal business name, CAGE code, or UEI
    3. Solve the security question and select “Check SAM Status NOW”\
    4. Allow the page to generate a brief summary that includes:
      • Expiration Date
      • NAICS Codes
      • CAGE Code
      • PSC Codes
      • POC’s
      • and more

What’s considered a small business to register for a SAM.gov?

SAM.gov Registration: What is considered a “Small Business”?

Any business or sole proprietor is able to register for SAM.gov However, to be considered a small business you must meet the Small Business Sized Standards set forth by the SBA (Small Business Administration).

When you’re registered in SAM.gov you will be able to obtain small business certifications as long as you meet the requirements.
