Who manages CAGE codes?

The assignment of CAGE Codes is managed by the Defense Logistics Agency of the US military (dla.mil). Once your SAM Registration goes through IRS validation, it will go through CAGE and you will be assigned (new SAM) or reviewed (renewal) by DLA. If you are unsure of your SAM Registration status, follow the steps below:

    • At the top of this page, select “Check SAM Status & Details” in red
    • Input your company’s legal business name, CAGE code, or UEI
    • A brief summary of your SAM Registration will generate which will include:
      • Expiration Date
      • NAICS Codes
      • POC’s

What is a CAGE code for a small business?

There is no specific CAGE Code for a small business. Each entity registered in SAM for All Awards will obtain their own unique CAGE Code assigned by the DLA (Defense Logistics Agency). If you are unsure of what your CAGE Code is (or if you are registered in SAM), follow the steps below:

    • At the top of this page, select “SAM & UEI Status Lookup Tool”
    • Input your company’s legal business name, CAGE code, or UEI
    • Solve the security question and select “Check SAM Status NOW”
    • Allow the page to generate a brief summary of the registration including;
      • UEI and/or CAGE Code
      • Expiration Date
      • Primary NAICS Codes
      • PSC and FSC Codes
      • POC’s
      • and more
    • If the registration is ACTIVE, it will tell you at the top of the summary

The processing times are taking a bit longer due to everchanging procedures so USBRI recommends beginning the process at least 60 days before the set expiration. If your business is registered in SAM.gov then you may have a CAGE Code assigned. Only legal entities registered in SAM will have a CAGE Code.

What is the meaning of SAM number?

What is a SAM Number?

The “SAM” or “SAMs” number refers to either the Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) or CAGE Code assigned by the DLA. The UEI and CAGE Code are both identification codes used when you are applying for any federal contracts or grants. The way to obtain a UEI or CAGE Code is by registering an entity into SAM and going through the validation processes.

Unique Entity Identifier (UEI)

In 2022, the DUNS number was phased out and replaced my SAM’s own UEI. It is a string of 12 alphanumerical characters and is the identification assigned by SAM so business’s can be begin the process of doing with the federal government. If you need to apply for any grants, you must have a UEI.

Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) Code

CAGE Codes are assigned by the Defense Logistics Agency. The DLA assigns CAGE Codes to entities registered in SAM who want to bid on contracts as well as grants.

When a NEW registration is submitted in SAM. it must go through the two validation processes. One of those validation processes include going through the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). They are in charge of assigning CAGE Codes to entities. If you are unsure if you have a CAGE Code, follow the steps below:
