CAGE Code’s are assigned by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). They are assigned after you complete a SAM Registration and it passes IRS and DLA/CAGE validation.

Yes. When you register in SAM.gov, the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) will assign you a CAGE code (NCAGE provided by NATO for international businesses). A CAGE Code is required in order to bid on federal contracts and grants and having an active registration in SAM.gov.

CAGE codes are the specific codes assigned to entities located in the United States. NCAGE codes are assigned to entities located outside of the United States. They are to register their entities through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA).

In regards to a “SAM code”, to get a UEI and/or CAGE code, you must submit a SAM.gov registration. If you are submitting a new registration, upon submission, you will be assigned a UEI. Once the registration goes through and completes IRS and DLA/CAGE validation, the entity will be assigned a CAGE code. There is nothing with SAM.gov called a “SAM code”.

According to the DLA website, the DLA contract is responsible for contracting, purchasing, storing and distributing most of the consumable, expendable and reparable items for DoD (Department of Defense). Its primary purpose is to meet the logistics requirements of the armed forces for food, clothing, fuel, repair parts and other items. In order to do business with the federal government, DLA/CAGE will assign you a CAGE code after your SAM Registration is active.
