How long does it take for SAM to assign a CAGE code?

After you submit your SAM Registration, it will go through two validation processes, IRS Consent Validation and DLA/CAGE Code assignment. Your CAGE code will be assigned by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA, also known as CAGE) after it completes the validation process. This usually takes 2-3 weeks depending on if DLA has any follow up questions during the registration and approval process.

During the SAM Registration process, you may be asked to submit additional documentation to confirm your entity’s information within these federal databases along with the entity’s status within the state in which it was registered.

As the SAM Registration is of the utmost priority for many businesses and organizations, it is imperative that it is registered proper and correctly in order to truly reap the benefits of being registered in SAM as a for-profit small business. This is especially true for most for-profit entities.

USBRI has been offering filing services and assistance for the SAM Registration and Small Business Certifications since 2011. There are many small obstacles and tedious tasks to be completed during the SAM Registration process. It is highly recommended to obtain assistance during this process, especially if completing the SAM Registration for the first time.

Do I need to update my CAGE code?

If you received an email stating that your SAM CAGE Code is set to expire, follow these suggested steps:

  • Read the fine print at the bottom of the email before anything else
  • Be cautious clicking on links or downloading any attachments
  • Check the email address of the sender. Any email from the Federal Government ends with a “.gov” or “.mil, if not, then it is most likely a creative marketing email from a private organization offering services
  • Be highly cautious taking any immediate actions from incoming calls or emails regarding any of these topics
  • If you are unsure, feel free to reach out to USBRI for advice or assistance

A number of these particular emails seem to speak of a an entity’s SAM CAGE Code “expiring” in order to get a response from the email receiver. When a SAM Registration is created and goes active, the CAGE Code associated with that entity automatically “renews”. According to DLA/CAGE, your CAGE Code will remain active for 5 years after your SAM registration becomes active. Every time your entity’s registration is renewed and active, your CAGE Code will renew with it.
