A NAICS code for a business is a 2- to 6-digit code that summarizes what your business provides in terms of a service. When registering in SAM (or, though rarely, required by your state when forming an LLC) you will be asked to identify your NAICS codes.

When registering in SAM, especially with the intention of obtaining a small business or set-aside certification, it is important to have a correctly listed NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) code. The NAICS codes will show prime contractors a brief descriptions of the type of service you provide.

    • Input your company’s legal business name, CAGE code, or UEI and solve the algebraic addition problem
    • Allow the page to load and you will see a brief summary of your SAM Registration that includes:
      • NAICS Codes
      • POC’s
      • Expiration Date

The NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) Code list can be found more extensively at census.gov/naics. Though there is no specific “list”, you can find any and all NAICS Codes relating to the type of work you do (i.e. constructions, roofing, and more).

A quick way to find a specific NAICS Code is by using the NAICS Code Lookup Tool. You can use the tool by following the steps below:

    • At the top of this page, hover over “Tools and Services”
    • Select “NAICS Code Lookup Tool”
    • Input any keyword or phrase that best describes the type of business you do.
    • Allow the page to generate a list of all the NAICS Codes pertaining to the keyword or phrase you selected.

    • At the top of this page, select “Check SAM & UEI Status“
    • Input your company’s legal business name, UEI, or CAGE Code
    • Solve the security question and select “Check SAM Status NOW”
    • Allow the page to generate a brief summary of your SAM Registration that will include:
      • NAICS Codes
      • Expiration Date (if within 60 days, begin the renewal process NOW)
      • CAGE Code and UEI
      • PSC and FSC Codes
      • POC’s
      • and more

Yes. Anyone can choose their own NAICS code for their business. Use the NAICS Code Lookup Tool to find what NAICS code you need by following the steps below:

    • At the top of this page, hover over “Tools & Resources” and select the fist option “NAICS Code Lookup Tool“
    • Input a keyword, phrase, or NAICS code and select “Find NAICS Code”
    • Allow the page to generate NAICS codes closely related to the information you submitted
