What is the first step in obtaining a federal contract?

The first step in obtaining a federal contract would be to have a SAM Registration. SAM is the money portal for the government, tracking where it goes, to who, and for what. So if you plan to take on contracting work for the government or receive federal grant dollars, you must be registered.
