A federal set-aside contract is a portion of government contracts that are “set aside” exclusively for small businesses and SBA Set-Aside programs. These contracts ensure that small, disadvantaged, or minority-owned businesses have a fair chance to compete for federal projects.
There are four SBA Set-Aside Programs, each with a percentage of federal contracting dollars allocated toward them:
- Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB/EDWOSB)
- 5% of Federal Contracting dollars allocated toward WOSB/EDWOSB Program particiapnts
- Veteran-OwnedSmall Business (VOSB/SDVOSB)
- While VOSB has many benefits, the VA set-aside 5% of federal contracts towards Service Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB)
- Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone Program)
- Specific federal contracts are awarded to businesses located in a HUBZone.
- 8(a) Minority Owned Small Business
- 5% of Federal Contracting Dollars allocated towards Minority-Owned Small Business Certification holders
